Speaking on Sky’s Murnaghan programme yesterday, Fallon said: “In some areas, particularly on the east coast, yes, towns do feel under siege from large numbers of migrant workers and people claiming benefits and it’s quite right that we look at that.” He also refered to towns being “swamped by huge numbers of migrant workers”.Last night, a Downing Street source said Fallon “accepts he should have chosen his words better”, adding that the defence secretary ought to have used the phrase “under pressure” instead. Fallon was discussing David Cameron’s plan to renegotiate the UK’s relationship with Europe, which has centred on the free movement of people. Yesterday, German chancellor Angela Merkel said her country would not back the Prime Minister’s bid to limit the number of migrant workers entering Britain from the rest of the EU. It comes as Cameron faces mounting pressure from MPs of all parties to reject a demand from Brussels for a £1.7bn top-up payment by 1 December. On Friday the Prime Minister said the EU “had another thing coming” if leaders expect the UK to pay up on time. And when the authorities added in the cost-cutting measures the banks would implement, both passed comfortably.“The results show that the core of the banking system is significantly more resilient, that it has the strength to continue to serve the real economy even in a severe stress, and that the growing confidence in the system is merited,” said Bank of England governor Mark Carney. Lenders had to show the prudential regulation authority (PRA) that they would still have a core capital ratio of above 4.5 per cent in the scenario.HSBC and Standard Chartered performed best – the banks have big overseas operations, and recorded capital buffers of above eight per cent each.Barclays, Santander and Nationwide maintained ratios of 7.5 per cent, 7.9 per cent and 6.7 per cent respectively. Lloyds’ ratio fell to 5.3 per cent and RBS’ to 5.2 per cent. Lloyds is safe from being ordered to do more as it is now building capital through profits, while RBS has already announced plans to issue bonds to raise funds. But the Co-op more than used up its buffers in the test, falling to a ratio of minus 2.6 per cent. After nearly collapsing 18 months ago, it has already got a recovery plan in place. But regulators ordered it to accelerate that plan yesterday, and the Co-op has hired Bank of America Merrill Lynch to help it sell off and run down its £6.6bn book of bad mortgage loans, inherited from the Britannia Building Society. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – No. 1

first_img Tags: World Charity Index 2014 Thursday 18 December 2014 1:38 am Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – No. 1 USA – £2.169bnIn a game of word association, most people on hearing the name Bill Gates would immediately say Microsoft. Yet with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation having already given away a staggering £20bn since its 2000 foundation, it’s a safe bet that in a couple of decades time, the charity will be more famous than the tech giant he co-founded. It’s already the biggest private foundation in the world, and arguably the most powerful. Since billionaire investor Warren Buffett pledged in 2006 to give the foundation most of his fortune, its firepower has almost doubled.  Gates, who has pledged to give away 95 per cent of his wealth, has taken on the charitable sector with the same kind of zeal with which he devised the Microsoft mission to get a PC in every home and business. CATALYTIC PHILANTHROPYThe foundation, which focuses on poverty and disease globally, and on education in the US, has gone for what Gates calls “catalytic philanthropy” – basically investing for big returns. It’s taken on big missions: eradicating polio and malaria and has thrown its money into areas which have so far been underfunded. When the foundation made its first big grant for malaria research – it nearly doubled the amount of money spent on the disease worldwide. Not because its grant was so big, but because up until then there had been little investment in malaria research. But the foundation does more than just hand over money, it actively tries to direct the strategy on the issues it targets, partnering with governments agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other charities to maximise its effectiveness. MAKING BETSIt also funds research, such as into new drugs and vaccines, providing seed funding for various ideas. “We think an essential role of philanthropy is to make bets on promising solutions that governments and businesses can’t afford to make. As we learn which bets pay off, we have to adjust our strategies and share the results so everyone can benefit,” Gates says. And by all accounts the self-declared nerd who dropped out of Harvard and ending up changing the world with his MS-DOS operating system for personal computers, has applied a similar hands on approach to philanthropy. EBOLA“He’s a very impressive man. He can talk in detail about health issues and his approach to philanthropy is strategically really sound,” says Angela Kail, head of the funders team at charity consultancy NPC. She points out that the foundation’s £31m pledge in September to help step up efforts to tackle the deadly Ebola virus in the affected countries was typical. “The money was split between the on the ground treatment and research, so short and long term. They responded really quickly, but still kept their strategic outlook,” she adds. AFRICAThe charity’s roots stem back to 1993 when Bill Gates and his wife Melinda went to Africa to see wild animals but ended up getting their first look at extreme poverty. Gates joined the foundation full time in 2006, and says because he and Melinda, both co-chairs, have built it together, it echoes the partnership he had with his Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. Melinda says while her husband takes a data-led approach, hers is more practical – working out, for example, how to persuade people to be vaccinated. “I think what I’ve taught him is to take that data and meet with people on the ground to understand, can you actually deliver that vaccine? Because the delivery piece is every bit as important as the science,” she says. For the full World Charity Index 2014 list take a look at our interactive graphic  whatsapp More From Our Partners A ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comBiden received funds from top Russia lobbyist before Nord Stream 2 giveawaynypost.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.org‘Neighbor from hell’ faces new charges after scaring off home buyersnypost.comBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comWhy people are finding dryer sheets in their mailboxesnypost.comInside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ not-so-average farmhouse estatenypost.comPuffer fish snaps a selfie with lucky divernypost.comI blew off Adam Sandler 22 years ago — and it’s my biggest regretnypost.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comKamala Harris keeps list of reporters who don’t ‘understand’ her: reportnypost.com980-foot skyscraper sways in China, prompting panic and evacuationsnypost.comSidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin are graying and frayingnypost.com Sharecenter_img Show Comments ▼ by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeHero WarsThis game will keep you up all night!Hero WarsMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekTele Health DaveRemember Pierce Brosnan’s Wife? Charlie Hebdo: Hundreds attend #JeSuisCharlie vigil in Trafalgar Square after Paris shooting

Some of those in attendance carried printed out posters with the phrase “Je Suis Charlie” in solidarity with the victims of the attack. Others held handwritten sheets while those with neither held up pens as a symbol of free speech. Both French and British observed the vigil in Trafalgar Square, with some of those assembled at one point singing France’s national anthem La Marseillaise. The vigil echoed one held at the Place de la Republique in Paris earlier today.(Source: Catherine Neilan)(Source: Catherine Neilan)(Source: Catherine Neilan) https://twitter.com/SebastianEPayne/status/552891651572895745 https://twitter.com/Harrylevy/status/552899848169865216 https://twitter.com/susiebubble/status/552894607475113984 https://twitter.com/paul_anski/status/552892964004179969 https://twitter.com/carofeast/status/552906898547429376 Show Comments ▼ Lynsey Barber Charlie Hebdo: Hundreds attend #JeSuisCharlie vigil in Trafalgar Square after Paris shooting Wednesday 7 January 2015 1:50 pm whatsappcenter_img Share whatsapp Tags: NULLlast_img read more

Sanofi signs off on a strong year with further dividend growth

first_imgThursday 5 February 2015 8:10 pm whatsapp Express KCS SANOFI celebrated a strong end to a positive 2014 by rewarding shareholders with a proposed dividend of €2.85, making it the 21st consecutive year of dividend growth at the company. The pharma giant saw robust growth in sales of its key product ranges with sales growth in its Genzyme products recording the biggest increase at 24 per cent for the year to total €2.6bn (£1.94bn).Overall sales of all products increased by five per cent for the year when adjusted for constant exchange rates to €33.8bn.Sales growth was geographically uneven, with emerging markets and US growth offsetting weakness in the rest of the world, where increased competition from generic brands has taken its toll, a situation affecting the entire industry. Net income for the year saw a 2.4 per cent increase on the previous year coming in at €6.8bn. Interim chief executive and chairman Serge Weinberg said the three month search to replace Christopher Viehbacher, who left the firm in October, was coming to an end with an announcement due at the end of the first quarter. The 16-month agreement to exclusive negotiations came to an end in February and a new deal could not be negotiated, leaving a question mark over the proposed 80-hectare development in Crystal Palace Park and whether it may be taken forward by a new developer. Bromley councillor Stephen Carr said:There is a major opportunity here to do something that might really improve the park and provide much-needed regeneration locally too. This was why we were prepared to properly listen to what ZhongRong had to say, but we were never going to simply say yes to absolutely anything as we need to get this right. Now, we will meet with community stakeholders, as we have done all the way along this process, to review [the] options.ZhongRong unveiled the £500m plan to rebuild the palace, which burned down in 1936, with an enthusiastic reception from Boris Johnson in 2013. The redevelopment was set to include restoration of the local park, a hotel and conference centre, visitor centre and commercial areas. General Election 2015 turnout: Parties hail record number of voters

first_imgSaturday 9 May 2015 10:15 am whatsapp General Election 2015 turnout: Parties hail record number of voters whatsapp Exit polls suggest record numbers of people voted in the General Election, as party leaders urged supporters to show their support in an attempt to swing the balance of power.Figures indicated there was a 66.1 per cent turnout in the election, according to the BBC. Right up to the final day of campaigning, polls indicated the vote would result in a hung parliament, causing  party leaders to sweep the nation in last-ditch attempts to rally any remaining votes. In the event however the conservatives won 331 seats, enough for a majority. In 2010 65.1 per cent of people voted, up from 61.4 per cent in 2005. These numbers had bounced back from a record low turnout in 2001, of 59.4 per cent – the lowest since the end of World War One. High turnout was predicted by many Twitter users as they tweeted about the queues they had experienced. Many ballot stations experienced higher demand people went to vote after work, with large queues forming in some constituencies.
