It’s been a community staple for years. In the Spring, a new group is taking over the property and revamping the 125-acre property. Some residents like Barbara Wagner, aren’t letting go that easily. Wagner said, “It’s very iconic and it’s one of the very few last remaining pieces of architecture that is from that era…from that time.”Right now, the hotel holds 319 rooms with 104 acres of green space that holds an 18-hole golf course an a 6-court tennis center.  AdvertisementRecommended ArticlesBrie Larson Reportedly Replacing Robert Downey Jr. As The Face Of The MCURead more81 commentsGal Gadot Reportedly Being Recast As Wonder Woman For The FlashRead more29 comments RELATEDTOPICS Naples soldier facing charges for wife’s murder June 16, 2021 Sea turtle caught on camera nesting on Naples beach June 16, 2021 AdvertisementTags: localnaplesnaples beach Wagner said this news was devastating. Over the years, she has served up new friendships on the courts with fellow tennis players like Rod Schwasinger. “This place is a real amenity for old Naples, it provides a place to play,” he said, “This is busy and it services a lot of people that come here in the winter.”Testimonies like his inspired Wagner to launch a petition to preserve the green space.Wagner said, “We just really want the opportunity to keep this tennis club intact where it is. We see no reason for the expense of digging all this up.”Their goal is to present it to City Council next month before the property gains new ownership. “At the end of the day, if this land goes away, it’s gone forever,” said Wagner. Over the past two years, when the The Athens Group was in the drafting phase, they have  hosted multiple public sessions asking for community input. The Athens Group has confirmed the future green space will include tennis courts and a golf course. But it’s unclear whether those amenities will be open to the public. The site will also hold 185 beachfront condos and a marketplace. On the other side of the property, its golf course and beloved tennis center will be closing down. To ease construction noise for nearby neighbors, The Athens Group will create a haul road through the middle of the golf course.  Woman shot outside Naples Waffle House June 16, 2021 Advertisement Study ranks Naples as best beach town in America to live June 16, 2021last_img read more
